Saint John's church is a registered historical site and a treasure of the congregation. To maintain this treasure requires the time and talent of many volunteers to see that the structural, electrical, plumbing and engineering of this wonderful place of worship continues to serve the spiritual needs of our community. The rich history of this special place is preserved by the many volunteers who lovingly give their time and talent to attend to the many details that make this such a special place.
The Fabric and Grounds Commission affords its members opportunities for service and giving in the following ways:
-
serving in gratitude for the bounteous gifts one receives from our Lord
-
helping to preserve our architectural treasure, one of the finest in our community
-
preserving the treasures within our historical structure
-
contributing to the stewardship of resources that are necessary to keep our doors open
-
maintaining our legacy for future generations
The Mulberry Street Cemetery
St. John's Historic Cemetery is located in the 100 block of South Mulberry ST, Hagerstown, MD.
The first Episcopal Church in Hagerstown was built on this site. History tells us that in 1787 ground for the cemetery was set aside, in the rear and south of the church.
St. John's had a capital improvement campaign in 1996. The original rock wall surrounding the cemetery had been deteriorating. A handmade wrought iron fence was put in the front with the original gates being refurbished and remounted between columns of hand picked stone from the original wall. Manufactured iron fence was placed on the sides and meets with the original stone back wall that was left in place.
Long neglected, this historic site has been lovingly restored by the hard work and dedication of a group of Saint John's members. Over 100 sites have been restored and the grounds brought back to its proud condition. Except for the mowing, volunteers maintain the cemetery, doing garden work and repairing fallen stones. Time is usually scheduled during the week for these activities throughout the summer. Please stop by.
The Garden Club
Led by Master Gardeners, our Garden Club tends the plantings and special gardens that adorn this historic site. Their "green thumbs" enhance the beauty of our church for the enjoyment of all. If you have a knack and passion for tilling the earth and nurturing the land, this special group may be the perfect expression of your ministry.
