OUTREACH MISSIONS SUPPORTED BY ST. JOHN'S PARISH
We are actively committed to helping fellow humans in need, both within our community and throughout the rest of the world. Here are outreach ministries that we perform:
-
A Cold Weather Shelter for the homeless. Along with other churches in our area, we take a turn for one week during the winter months feeding, berthing, and providing laundry and other services for up to seventy homeless persons a night.
-
St. John’s Shelter. Our church provides up to five furnished apartments for homeless families as they strive to find employment and acquire a place to live.
-
Habitat for Humanity. We are strong supporters of Habitat, both financially and by providing volunteer labor. In our most recent “build,” twenty-two members of the congregation volunteered to work on the house,
-
Donated Food Program. Each Sunday members of the congregation bring non-perishable food to church where it is placed in baskets. At the offertory, the children bring the food to the altar. After the service it is taken to a local food bank.
-
Periodic Mission Trips. Our members have travelled to Vietnam, Burma, and Haiti and to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Another mission trip is scheduled for Haiti in early 2012.
-
San Mar Home for Children. We provide financial support and volunteer leadership to a local children’s home.
-
Apple Gleaning. A local orchardist permits us to glean edible apples after his harvesting has been completed. These apples are donated to a local food bank.
-
An Afternoon Arts Program for young children. St. John’s sponsors this program in conjunction with the County Art Museum and Girls, Inc.
-
Alternatives to Violence Program. One of our parishioners conducts this program in a local state prison. It has had a profound effect on many of the inmates who have completed the training.
-
Christmas Shoe Box Presents. Last year our church filled over seventy boxes full of presents for children.
- Adoption of an Elementary School. This is a new program where St. John’s will supply clothing, classroom readers, library books and weekend food for economically distressed students and to their families.
