The Baptism of the Lord - January 10, 2016

Monday Night Series: All adults are invited and encouraged to attend the weekly Monday Night Series book group, that meets in St. Mary's Chapel at 6:30. There is no need to sign up, all you need to do is show up!

The next book to be discussed is The Gift of Imperfection by Dr. Brené Brown. Dr. Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work. She has spent the past thirteen years studying vulnerability, courage, worthiness, and shame. Brené is the author of three #1 New York Times Bestsellers: Rising StrongDaring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection. Brené’s 2010 TEDx Houston talk, The Power of Vulnerability, is one of the top five most viewed TED talks in the world, with over 25 million viewers.  Her TED talk, available on YouTube, is a good introduction for anyone interested in getting acquainted with her work.

Dr. Brown’s book is available from Amazon for $8.66 in paperback and $3.99 on Kindle. I plan to place an order early this week. Please call or email the office if you would like to be included in the order.

House Blessing:  If you wish to have your house blessed please contact the office at 301-733-2560.

Giving Envelopes: Envelopes for 2016 are located at the back of the church. Please take your envelopes and review your number as it may have changed.  If you do not have envelopes and would like envelopes, please contact the office.

Annual Meeting:  Saint John’s annual meeting will be held on Sunday, January 24, 2016.   All annual reports are due to Melonie by Monday, January 11.  Please use New Times Roman font size 12 and email to secretary.stjohns@myactv.net.

Youth Group:  The Youth Group planning meeting is scheduled for February 7th, not January 31st as reported in Soundings.   Youth grades 6 and up, and interested parents and adults are invited to attend and discuss plans for the youth group moving forward.  The meeting will be held in Saint Mary’s Chapel at 11:30 a.m.

Mitten Tree:Dear members of the congregation and Parish Life Commission.   The “Mitten Tree” yielded eight (8) full bags of mittens, gloves, caps, hats and scarves.  They were delivered to Bester School on the coldest day of the year!  Thank you!   Service and outreach Commission.

Party on Prospect: Don’t miss a really good time!  Tickets are going fast, and you don’t want to be left out in the cold!  Dr. Mark Cook and Friends will provide an evening of cool jazz along with heavy hors d’oeuvres, fabulous desserts, beer, and wine as Trimble Hall turns into an elegant cabaret for the evening. Winter Wonderland is the theme for the February 5 soiree from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Only a limited number of tickets are available at $35 apiece.  All proceeds will go to Saint John’s Outreach Projects.  See Sue Sowers at the Antietam Street entrance right after the service for your non-refundable ticket or contact her at 301 733-4370.  The event is scheduled with the expectation that the weather will cooperate, however a blizzard date is Sunday, Feb. 7 from 5 – 8 p.m. Think warmer temperatures and plan to enjoy the evening and its entertainment!

Reach Cold Weather Shelter: There are hundreds of homeless folk right here in Washington County and there is a great need for the Reach cold weather shelter and for volunteers during St. John’s week February 28 through March 5.

A variety of tasks, shifts and chores are available…stop by the table at the Antietam Street entrance, visit with Becca Burford and Teresa Taylor in person between services or via email: rlburford@myactv.net (Becca) or phone 301-471-1947 (Becca) or (Teresa) 301-471-4512.

Betty Markle has graciously agreed to handle the coordination of all the kitchen duties. Please contact her directly to offer your assistance in that area.

To learn more you can visit the Reach website www.reachofwc.org.

Two big changes this year: sorry but no volunteers under the age of 13 are allowed. Teens 13-17 are allowed in the kitchen only and each must be accompanied by an adult and we’re allowed no more than 10 in the kitchen period. All volunteers must fill out the annual volunteer form online! Teresa & Becca will be happy to assist with this!
