Second Sunday of Advent

Caroling at Western Maryland Hospital: All children and youth (plus families) of Saint John’s are invited to come and sing Christmas carols to the residents at Western Maryland Hospital on Saturday, December 16th from 2-4 pm.  Please meet in the lobby of Western Maryland Hospital to grab a song sheet and join in.  Contact Margaret Clinch at youthmin.stjohns@myactv.net for details or to confirm you are coming.

Calling all current and future youth lectors! Father Todd will hold a training session for all current and aspiring youth lectors on Sunday, December 17 at 12:15 PM in the Nave.  If you are currently a lector, or if you would like to participate as a lector in future youth-led services, this session is for you. Please come and learn more about serving in this important ministry of sharing God's Word.

No Children’s Chapel on December 17th: In order to let the parents and youth choirs participate fully in Advent Lessons and Carols, there will be no Children’s Chapel or Little Episcopals on Sunday, December 17th.  The Nursery will still be staffed and attended for children under 2 years old.

Toys for Tots: Shepherd University Music Department is having a Toys for Tots Campaign. A drop off box for toys is in Trimble Hall near the stage.

Martins and Weis gift cards are the perfect gift for those for whom it is difficult to shop.  Your gift card purchase includes a gift to Service and Outreach projects too!  Purchase your gift cards early at the Antietam Street entrance after each service.   Please note there will be no gift cards sales on Sunday, December 24.

Stewardship: If you have not returned a pledge card but expect to continue your 2018 giving at a

particular level, please give us notice by completing and returning a card. Our budget is dependent on the expected giving level of Saint John's parishioners.

Saint John’s Shelter: The Board of Directors of Saint John's Shelter is asking you to help us keep dreams intact this Holiday Season for the five families currently living in the Shelter. At Christmas we strive to provide each family with some fruit, cookies, and candy, as well as a Walmart gift card for EACH resident (not just each family) this enables them to purchase gifts for each other or buy items the family needs. We will gratefully accept donations toward this effort through Sunday December 17th. Please see Julie Barlup or Ann Chaney before/after 10:15 services or Becca Burford before/after 8 o'clock services (or reach Becca at 301-471-1947 or rlburford@myactv.net). We ask you to keep the resident families of Saint John’s Shelter in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

Spread Christmas Cheer to Bester School! The shoe boxes are here!  Select a card with the age and gender of a child you wish to provide presents for. Pick up a plastic shoe box and a lid.  Sign your name and phone number along with the age and gender of the child on the sign-up sheet. Purchase age appropriate gifts that fit in the box.  Wrap the box with Christmas paper and tape the card with the age and gender of the child to the top of the box.  Return the wrapped box to the church NO LATER THAN DEC. 10TH!  God Bless you for making a child’s Christmas merrier!

Christmas at the Community Café: Christmas is coming! Making up the packages last year went great and we think everyone was pleased with the groceries and personal hygiene items…

but we would like to try something else this year. The sentiment of many of our customers is that they love that our meals and desserts are home made. Even when what we are serving is not one of their favorites or is not quite right, they like that we care enough to put extra effort into preparing the food. There is a lot of heart in what we do at the Café. We are thinking it would be nice if we made up cookie boxes and possibly add a couple pieces of fruit as our Christmas gift this year. We want the cookies to be homemade and that means we are calling for the bakers in the parish to bake an extra dozen cookies or more to fill the boxes. Anyone who doesn't bake and. wants to participate might bring some oranges or apples. We need all of the items by Dec. 17th. Then we can spend the next week packaging the items. We want to thank everyone in advance for all of your support throughout the year.  Susan and Bob Rauth

Volunteers are needed as Greeters and Docents for Saint John's participation in the city wide Holiday Houses of Worship Tour.  Your commitment would be only 2 hours on Tuesday, December 26 (snow date December 27) from 3:00 to 5 PM and/or 5 PM to 7 PM.  This night is an opportunity for our church to share its architectural splendor with our community.  If you are able to assist us, please contact Gail Petre at 443-205-5670 or Kristy Gross at 240-385-6654. Thank you!

Holiday Houses of Worship Tour: Christmas cookies, lemon bars, brownies and other hand held desserts are needed for the Holiday Houses of Worship Tour scheduled for Tuesday, December 26.  Last year we had approximately 400 visitors.  A contribution of a dozen cookies will greatly help us to demonstrate the hospitality of Saint John’s. A signup sheet is located at the Antietam Street entrance. Please drop off your donation at the church office between 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Friday or in the Trimble Hall Kitchen at the Christmas Eve Service. Questions may be directed to Gail Petre or Kristy Gross.

The Reach Cold Weather Shelter opened October 29th and the men's bunks are to full capacity, the ladies still have some room.  This was surprising to me since the weather hasn't been too cold.  I know this is a busy time of the year but want to let you know we are looking forward to our week at the shelter, February 25th thru March 4th. We hope you will consider volunteering some of your valuable time one, two or more evenings during our week. Together we can make a difference in the lives of these people by providing them a hot meal and shelter from the elements. We need a minimum of 10 volunteers  PLUS a kitchen crew and warm meal EACH night.  Most commitments are just 2-3 hours, some are longer.  A variety of tasks are available and I'm sure you will find one that suits you. Volunteer sign-ups will begin in January after each service but you're welcome to let us know if you want to sign up early and reserve your spot.  Missy McCray 717-420-7118, nmmjj101119@gmail.com or Linda Gray Jones 3014-302-9810, pharmalinda83@aol.com. You may contact Carla Charles if you want to help with meals. 301-991-7934  Please note that volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Bester School Needs:  Bester School continues to need our help in providing underwear for its young children. The school greatly appreciates all that we've donated in the past and all that we can do now and in the future.  Sizes needed are 4, 6, and 8 for both boys and girls. Please contact Lou Lamb at church or call her at 301-437-5704.  Thank you.
