Advent 3: December 16, 2018
No Children’s Chapel on December 23: In order to let the parents and youth choirs participate fully participate in the Advent Lessons and Carols. There will be no Children’s Chapel or Little Episcopals next Sunday. The Nursery will still be staffed and attended for children under 2 years old.
Weekday Liturgies The congregation is invited to attend Evening Prayer on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Church; the midweek Eucharist is held on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. in Saint Mary’s Chapel.
Adult Forum: “Non-canonical Gospels” While these other gospels are, for the most part, much later in date and more legendary in character than the New Testament Gospels, they nonetheless are significant for scholars of the New Testament. For example, Gnostics believed that there was a radical disjuncture between the worlds of matter and spirit; matter was inherently evil – spirit was good. Join the conversation.
Christmas is coming and Saint John’s Shelter will once again be collecting donations to give the families at the shelter a gift card from Wal-Mart, cookies, fruit and candy. If you would like to donate please make checks payable to Saint John’s Shelter noting in the memo section “Christmas”. Give checks or money to Bill Soulis or Ann Chaney by today. Thank you. Christmas Boutique: Today is the last day for The Christmas Boutique to be open for business after the 8AM and 10:15 AM services. As in years past this is a fundraiser to support the activities of our Journey to Adulthood (J2A) group. Be sure to come check out the goodies to see if there is something you can purchase in support of our youth. There might even be some loaves of fresh baked bread to entice you!
Volunteers are needed as Greeters and Docents for Saint John's participation in the city wide Holiday Houses of Worship Tour. Your commitment would be only 2 hours on Wednesday, December 26 from 3:00 to 5:00 PM and/or 5:00 to 7:00 PM. This night is an opportunity for our church to share its architectural splendor with our community. If you are able to assist us including refreshments, setup or cleanup, please contact Dusty Graham at 301-991-5612 or Bruce Massey at 240-675-4498. Thank you!
Holiday Houses of Worship Tour: Christmas cookies, lemon bars, brownies and other hand held desserts are needed for the Holiday Houses of Worship Tour scheduled for Wednesday, December 26. Last year we had approximately 400 visitors. A contribution of a dozen cookies will greatly help us to demonstrate the hospitality of Saint John’s. A signup sheet is located at the Antietam Street entrance. Please drop off your donation at the church office between 8 AM and 4 PM Monday through Friday or in the Trimble Hall Kitchen at the Christmas Eve Services. Questions may be directed to Ann Chaney or Caroline Wright.
Bester School and Donations – Due to a jump in the student population at Bester Elementary School this year, the former rooms used for storing donated clothing are now being used for classroom needs. Therefore, until further notice, we will no longer collect clothing for the school. However, the school still needs to replenish its underwear supply for young children – both boys and girls, sizes 4, 6, and 8. Please contact Lou Lamb to provide underwear for Bester’s young and needy students.
What’s Cookin’ for Christmas at the Community Café: Your filled bag of groceries is due today.
Please leave in Trimble Hall.
