Acolyte Guild

The St. John's Acolyte Guild has both youth and adults who have committed to live the Guild's Motto "I am among you as one who serveth." Acolytes who participate in the Sunday Eucharist and the special services like The Great Vigil of Easter, weddings and funerals learn by assisting bishops, priests, deacons, and lay people perform their special ministries in these services.

In serving Our Lord at his altar, an acolyte develops leadership skills not offered elsewhere, a special appreciation for the richness of the liturgies in The Book of Common Prayer, and the meaning of prayer and worship. In our service, we meet new people, find new friends, discover the meaning of commitment, and develop a sense of pride in helping create beautiful and meaningful worship.

About Bill Young: Bill Young started worshiping at St. John's in 1947 when he was invited to be a boy chorister. For nine years he had the privilege of singing with the Great Choir and during that time was immersed in the liturgies of The Book of Common Prayer and the choral tradition of the Anglican Communion. That experience greatly enriched his life and fed the commitments that were made at his Baptism and renewed at his Confirmation. While attending high school in Michigan, Bill became an acolyte and continued this ministry while serving in the U.S. Army. After returning to civilian life and St. John's in 1972 Bill has trained many young people in this Parish and the experience has been a true blessing.
