The Second Sunday after Pentecost
June 7, 2026
When Jesus passes the tax booth and says to Matthew, “Follow me,” he does not pause to ask whether Matthew deserves it. Matthew was the kind of person respectable people kept at a distance, and yet he is the one Jesus calls, the one whose table Jesus is glad to share. When the religious leaders grumble, Jesus gives them a line worth carrying through the week: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” It is easy to assume God is most interested in people who already have their lives in order. This Gospel says otherwise. The ones who reach toward Jesus here are a grieving father on his knees and a woman who has been unwell for twelve years, certain that even the hem of his cloak is enough. Jesus meets both of them without hesitation. That is the church we hope to be: a place where no one has to earn a seat at the table, and where reaching out, however quietly, is always met with mercy. Welcome the stranger. Welcome one another. Welcome Jesus.

At Saint John’s
✚ Annual Parish Picnic and Outdoor Worship, Sunday, June 14
The 10:15 a.m. service moves outdoors to the Leitersburg Ruritan Picnic Pavilion, followed by a covered-dish lunch, games, and the recognition of our graduates. Fried chicken and table settings are provided. There will also be an 8:00 a.m. service at the church.

We will honor our high school and college graduates at the picnic. Please send your graduate’s name, school, and degree to the parish office.
✚ Guest Clergy and Organist This Week
Fr. Rick is away at a clergy retreat and returns to the office June 9. We warmly welcome the Rev. Steven McCarty as celebrant and preacher, and Lorie Payne as guest organist.
✚ Summer Pickup Choir
Choir Call is at 9:45 a.m. in the choir room. No robes, no rehearsals, no pressure. Children, youth, and adults are all welcome.
✚ Children’s Church and Nursery
Both are on summer break through June, July, and August.
Community & Outreach
✚ Episcopal Night at Meritus Park, Friday, June 19
Join the Episcopal Churches of Western Maryland for an evening of fellowship and Flying Boxcars baseball. Gates open at 5:00 p.m., game time 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 per person, cash only. See Cathy Bushey or Peg Brown.
✚ Micah’s Backpack Donations
As the school year ends, the program is short on shelf-stable, single-serving lunches and dinners for children at Bester Elementary. Items such as boxed macaroni and cheese or canned soup are gratefully received.
